Noodle OrchestraPerformance and sound piece by Adnan Alsannaa, Ali Milad, Ali Nabeel, Layla Alammari, Omnia Elamir, Rahma and Zozo

This work is a performance born from frustration with the art world’s disconnect from lived reality and its unspoken rules, including codes of exclusivity, moral posturing, narrow expectations of what it means to be “serious,” and the idea that to climb its ladders one must perform. Rather than reproducing those demands, the work creates space for refusal. Refusal is not understood as absence but as an alternative way of producing art, through play, silliness, shared authorship, and collective experimentation.

The performance took place in Studio 10 at Alriwaq with seven participants, both artists and non-artists. It began with a discussion on refusal, followed by the collective reading of Leonard Cohen’s Thousands poem and warm-up exercises using body, movement, and voice. From there, the group improvised a sound piece using both mouth and body as well as everyday materials such as food wrapping, bowls, and cutlery, which was recorded live while cooking and eating together.

The use of noodles was not incidental. As the go-to meal of the two artists, Ali and Omnia, who share the studio, noodles carried the rhythms of their everyday working life into the performance, blurring the line between art practice and routine. By embracing humor, intimacy, and collective improvisation, Noodle Orchestra resists rigid hierarchies of success and proposes art as a space for openness and shared experience.

Behind the Glass: Labor and Automation in the Gulf
Dimenssions: 14.8cm x 21cm
Essay
Drawing inspiration from the visionary concepts of Gulf futurism, this work explores our faith in technology’s ability to elevate humanity beyond nature’s constraints. It acts as a mirror to modern AI innovations, delving into the “black boxing” of progress, in which technology is presented as autonomous and self-sustaining, while obscuring the hidden labor, environmental costs, and power dynamics behind it. Through this, we face an ethical dilemma: Is technology a façade that hides human exploitation, while projecting an image of progress that nations and corporations do not truly possess?

Every social construct is a weapon, if you use it rightDimensions: 100cm x 80cm x 20 cm
Assemblage and sound piece
Globalization, along with its social changes, has resulted in increased migration due to conflict, disaster, and socioeconomic disparities. Cities are now multicultural, making language both a key part of identity and a significant barrier for migrants. This artwork introduces and explores the weaponization of language in society, highlighting the pervasive influence of xenophobia in societal interactions, particularly in a region where migration has been a cornerstone of growth and development since the discovery of oil. Together, these elements create an abstract narrative on the complexities of language and invite viewers to contemplate the power dynamics at play.

This piece was inspired by the artist's childhood dollhouse, which was crafted from a cardboard box cut out like a theater stage, where everything inside was flat. The flatness of the dollhouse reflects the lack of intimacy, emotional depth, and surface-level interactions the artist experienced. After many years, watching A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen revealed parallels between the play and the roles individuals play within family structures in contemporary society. The artist recognizes the struggle to transcend the predetermined paths of their scripted narratives. The dollhouse has come to symbolize women's negotiation of gendered social spaces, contrasting the home as a female-occupied private space with the male-dominated public spheres.

Inheritance considers not only what is passed down physically, but also the values and habits inherited across generations. Growing up in a context where nothing would be thrown away, the artist internalised shame and anxiety around clutter, and now carries this through an obsessive need to shape and control her surroundings. The work reflects how learned behaviours quietly shape our internal worlds, revealing psychological rooms that often remain invisible to others.

The piece presents a disinfectant and an antiseptic solution that kills bacteria and provides protection against germs that cause illness. In disguise is what’s inside; it’s filled with the blessed holy water from the Zamzam well in Mecca. Water that will cleanse you, cure your illness, and one that can perform miracles. In consumer-driven societies, it’s commonplace for even religious elements to be commodified, and sold in grocery stores like ordinary products. This raises an important question: are these products truly beneficial or detrimental to us?

I Never Could Talk to You | لم أتمكن من التحدث معك أبدًاDimensions: 80cm x 80cm x 75cm
Iron, Cotton, Dacron
The sculpture "I Never Could Talk to You" intricately explores the collective experience of womanhood. The title draws inspiration from Sylvia Plath's poem "Daddy," it navigates the artist's personal journey of self-censorship and critiques patriarchal dominance. The work embodies the tension between feminine and masculine energies through material contrasts. The central element is an enlarged Scold’s Bridle (a 16th century instrument of punishment for a scolding woman, consisting of an iron framework for the head and a sharp metal gag for restraining the tongue).

The contorted female figure is housing a show, symbolizing historical and contemporary oppression. The artwork poignantly addresses the ongoing global struggles of women, depicting the weight of cultural coercion and the modern dilemma where women, despite seeming liberated, face invisible constraints from societal indoctrination. The bent-over figure, seemingly expected to escape, creates a pervasive entrapment akin to a cage, emphasizing the enduring challenges women confront in decision-making about their bodies worldwide.

The expectation to keep calm and collected in an unjust world, despite our tragedies and the rise of the modern 'New Age' spirituality as a one size fits all solution for various emotional and mental issues.

A non-isolated colony
Dimensions: 44.5cm x 36cm
Photograph, Safety pins, Paper towel, Ink
Assemblage of mixed material
A piece that expresses the artist's relationship with her mother, as a child who was raised with a sense of isolation, likened to a safety pin labeled 'safe,' yet capable of causing hurt and damage. Having been born in a small town to the northwest of Cairo and subsequently growing up in the UK within a household that upheld traditional Egyptian values, she experienced a childhood marked by the brewing of mixed identities, making the quest for acceptance and belonging a struggle. The artist consistently felt conflicted with everything she absorbed in her environment, resulting in a profound sense of impurity and absence.
